The Many Advantages of Belonging to a Society

Throughout most people's lives, it will be necessary for them to have involvement with a society. This may be when they are looking to attain educational or employment qualifications, where the results are subject to adjudication by the appropriate governing society.

It may also be when we have a complaint and wish to take this issue on to the governing society of the particular field involved. Our social and personal lives will also involve societies at some time or another. For instance ex-pats who have settled in Estepona in Costa del Sol may wish to join a local social society, such as a book club, swimming organisations or even gardening societies. This will allow those who have recently relocated the chance to integrate within the community.

For many single people, being involved within a society gives them a sense of belonging within the group, so eradicating their sense of loneliness. Belonging to a group or society can also greatly increase their chances of meeting a suitable partner and would provide the added advantage of meeting someone who already shares the same interests as themselves. Dentistry in Ancient Egypt

dentistry is a profession that began in Ancient Egypt more than five thousand years ago. The first evidence of dental work was found in some of the earliest Egyptian mummies. As you may know, only rich Egyptians were mummified after death. And these were the only people who could afford dental work.

The most common dental procedures in early Egypt were not surprisingly quite simple. More often than not, a tooth was simply extracted by a doctor or dental specialist. However, we do know that more complex procedures were occasionally attempted. Evidence of drilling in plates of jawbones has been documented.

Why did early Egyptian dentists drill? Most historians believe that drilling was done to relieve the pressure caused by an abscessed tooth. The Egyptian people had a diet that was tough on the teeth. And without any brushes or floss, they had no way to prevent the buildup of plaque or to stop infections. (more...)

What Happened to the Argaric People?

The Argaric people of south-eastern Spain created one of the world's first urban societies. Archeologists have traced their origins back more than 4300 years. But after seven hundred years their society simply vanished. Where did they go? That question remained unanswered… until now.

For decades it was simply assumed that some unknown climatic event wiped out the Argaric people. But according to a recent study, archeologists now believe that they may have sown the seeds of their own destruction.

The study suggests that the Argaric people may have exhausted their natural resources by mistake. The researchers determined that they were setting large fires to clear the forests for grazing and mining. Shortly thereafter, it is believed that the once diverse forest vanished only to be replaced by stunted, fire-prone scrubs where the charcoal would only have been of any use in graphic design schools. The Secrets of a Successful Society

Over the course of human history, there have been countless societies and civilisations. But what makes a society successful? Is it longevity or cultural influence? In this brief article we are going to examine a few of the most common definitions of societal success.

Because there are literally dozens of definitions of success, we will focus on the most popular ones — education, health and wealth. We have chosen these three definitions because they are hallmarks of the most successful societies.

As you might expect, education is the most reliable way for a person to obtain wealth and to live a longer life. It is no surprise that wealthy people have always lived longer and healthier lives than poorer citizens. Not only could they afford more and better food, but they also had access to the best doctors. But the modern definition of a successful society has changed along with marketing online. (more...)

What Makes a Civilised Society?

For centuries, most people assumed that a civilised country and a modern country were essentially the same thing. But the truth is that most of these so-called civilised countries were anything but. For example, the Americans treated blacks like second-class citisens in their own country, while the British managed oppressive colonies all over the world.

So, what makes a civilised nation? Well, we know that it is not technology. Just because people have access to the internet and international shipping removals France does not make them civilised. In fact, a technological advantage between nations has often led to war and subjugation.

That is why we believe that the basic foundation of any civilised society must be freedom. And in order to have freedom, we must have equality. All citizens must be afforded the same basic right to pursue success, however they might define it. (more...)

What Makes a Good Society?

When we talk about individual happiness, there are many things that a man can do to improve his lot in life. He can get a better job, find the love of his life and start a family. But what about change on a broader scale? Are there steps the government can take to increase the happiness and wellbeing of all of its citizens?

Believe it or not, a new study has concluded that there is. What are the hallmarks of a happy society? All of the data suggests that democratic nations that offer political freedom and equal rights have much happier citizens and more stable governments.

Of course, economic concerns are also quite important. If communism taught us anything, it was that people are willing to surrender their individual rights when they are promised economic progress. We also know that too much freedom can lead to rising debts and credit card complaints. (more...)

Society and the Great Man

Sociology is the study of societies. More often than not, it focuses on large groups of people and attempts to divine certain patterns. But today we will discuss the individual and the role that society plays in fostering greatness.

What comes to mind when we say names like Beethoven, Mozart or Michelangelo? Obviously, they were all great geniuses who had a profound effect on human history. But contrary to popular belief, genius is not produced in a vacuum. The truth is that each of these men succeeded in part because of the society in which they lived.

In fact, all of the men we mentioned achieved success in societies that valued beauty, truth and goodness above all else. That is why all of these artists were supported by generous benefactors who believed that it was their social duty to support it instead of putting in new carpets. (more...)

Technology and Society

As any student of history will tell you, technology can have a profound effect on society. Perhaps that is why certain eras have been named after the dominant technology, such as the Stone Age, the Industrial Age, and the Information Age.

As you are undoubtedly aware, the primary goal of technology is to make our lives easier. At home, this may mean an additional five hundred television channels on the telly or an indoor hot tub. While at work, new technologies almost always promise improved efficiency.

Is technology inherently good or bad? For every new technology, there is often a group that opposes it. Years ago, these people were called Luddites, because they opposed technological progress of any kind. But today they are simply dismissed as being out of touch. After all, who wouldn't want to replace old used cars with luxury vehicles? (more...)

Escaping our Rat Race Society

Be honest now, have you ever contemplated escaping the mundane rat race of our society? I did, hence the reason why I now work for myself as a professional freelance writer. In truth, nearly every single adult in our country considers forgetting all about having to search the job centre online and opting to work for themselves instead.

Also, some people decide that an alternative to escaping our rat race is to up sticks and venture to an entirely different one. This would no doubt help to account for the fact that thousands of we Brits are still heading for other warmer climes.

Spain has always been at the very top of this list; but is this rather like jumping out of the frying pan and straight into the fire? (more...)

The Earliest Civilised Societies

If you have ever been lucky enough to spend a couple of weeks in Rome apartments, you would have been provided with a clear insight into how this ancient civilisation really was way ahead of everyone else in the world at this time.

Two thousand years ago, anyone living in the British Isles would have been akin to cave dwellers, compared with the Romans. Our technological advancements would not have evolved that far from the time when the first Homo Sapiens roamed this planet.

In contrast, the Romans were already millennia ahead of anyone else. Their society was like a well-oiled machine, with Rome proudly accepted as the capital of this amazing region. (more...)

Societies Are Constantly Evolving

Our society is full of rapid technological change. In the societies before us, and especially in the hunter-gatherer societies, evolution was a mere thought. It is only in the past couple hundred years has our society truly blossomed into a technological powerhouse.

It is amazing to think that simple things like televisions and computers did not exist a hundred years ago. We cannot imagine a society where they do not exist because they have been incorporated into our daily lives. If you were to remove all of the televisions sets and computers our society would go into a state of chaos.

We are interested in cheap cell phone service Providers and finding the best deal on internet prices. These are the things that we worry about now, not what we are going to eat in a week. Past societies were more concerned with survival whereas we are simply worried about our commodities. (more...)

This is Sparta!

Released in the spring of 2007, the movie 300 tells the story of king Leonidas, who along with three hundred Spartan soldiers defends his city against the mighty Persian Army. The movie was a global hit and grossed over three hundred million pounds. Why was it so popular?

The film focuses on the Battle of Thermopylae that occurred in 480 BC. Why do moviegoers care about a battle that happened over two millennia ago? One reason is that the movie centres on the mysterious Spartans, who created one of the most unique societies in history.

While the Athenians were busy with their art, poetry and playwrighting, the Spartans had a single goal. It was the aim of every man or boy to become the best solider in the city. Their culture was a warrior culture where young boys were trained to fight soon after they learned to walk. They certainly had no need for an 0845 phone number. The reason Sparta became one of the most prominent military powers in ancient Greece had little to do with the warlike nature of its people. Rather, the Spartans became a military power because it was necessary to their survival. You see, they inhabited a region that suffered constant raids from more powerful armies. (more...)

What Became of the Inca Empire?

The Inca Empire is often remembered as a somewhat primitive society that rose to prominence before the Conquistadors arrived. But that is only part of the story. Yes, certain aspects of Inca culture could be described as primitive. For example, they did not have a written language. But they also completed intricate architectural projects that were on a par with the work of the Europeans.

In fact, history tells us that the Spanish Conquistadors marvelled at the sights of the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu. That was in the sixteenth century. And contrary to popular belief, the Inca people did exist long before the Europeans arrived. The Inca people can trace their history back to the thirteenth century.

The first Incas came from modern-day Peru. They lived on the highlands and for some strange, unexplained reason they suddenly became obsessed with the idea of building an empire. For almost a century, the Inca people successfully conquered most of the lands and tribes in western South America. They did not even need an UK 0800 number to accomplish this. (more...)

Who were the Luddites?

Is technology inherently good or bad? People have been searching for an answer to this question for centuries. One of the first groups to offer an opinion was the Luddites. They believed technology had a negative effect on society. Of course, the only reason they hated it was that it had cost them their jobs.

The first groups formed shortly after British factories began replacing trained artisans with machines during the Industrial Revolution. Protesters often took their anger out on mechanised looms and other industrial machines. Their primary objection was that they could be run by unskilled workers, who were often paid a pittance compared to trained artisans.

Beginning in 1811, the Luddites found a following and proceeded to burn down a number of British factories. In a little over a year, the British Army was able to suppress the uprising and several Luddite leaders were imprisoned or executed. What would the Luddites think of a virtual phone number? Early Societies, The Hunter-Gathers

According to sociologists, early societies were often defined by how they procured their food. And while it is believed that the first human societies relied on simple scavenging, by the time they could fashion weapons and tools they began to hunt. Most anthropologists believe that the first hunter- gatherers appeared around 1.8 million years ago.

But even then, most of their food was obtained by gathering. After all, hunting was extremely dangerous and hunting injuries and deaths were not at all uncommon. According to most experts, the early hunter-gatherers procured about 80 percent of their food from gathering.

What did they eat? Foods like eggs, nuts, fruit and even seafood were quite common. And when it came to hunting, most early hunter-gatherers searched for animals that had been killed by other predators before they sharpened their spears. They certainly could have used an 0844 number to order a takeaway. (more...)

The New Society

Many of us have belonged over the years to local societies such as the co-operative where we receive some of the profits back in the form of a dividend.

The new wave of cash back sites on the internet are similar in that we receive a percentage of the purchase back, the main difference being that that sites also make a profit on the transactions.

So how does it work? It is extremely easy to use. There are tens of cash back sites on the internet. Check them out to see which offer the best deal on your preferred retailers. The main criteria are the percentage earned on the sites you use most, which retailers are covered, and how easy it is to withdraw your cashback. (more...)

Who were the Hunter Gatherers?

According to the anthropologists, the first humans were hunter-gatherers. This means that they procured their food from a combination of hunting and gathering. As soon as they were able to fashion effective weapons, humans began to rely less on simple scavenging. Learn more here.

However, scientists remain relatively certain that these early societies obtained most of their food, as much as eighty percent, through gathering. The reason for this is simple: hunting was extremely dangerous. And when the first hunter-gatherers appeared, about 1.8 million years ago, their weapons were quite primitive.

A sharpened stick or a spear was often not enough to pierce the tough hide or fur of a predator; and when it did not, the hunter quickly became the hunted. It was not at all uncommon for a hunter to die on a hunting trip. Therefore, most members of the tribe focused solely on gathering. (more...)
