How often have you been asked to sign up to societies? Probably more than you care to remember, and you would be forgiven for thinking that they are a waste of time. There is a society for almost everything on earth and you have a hard job sorting the good ones from the bad.

But if you look carefully and do your research, there are some societies well worth your time, and sometimes your money. You just need to find the details here and there and find out which one is right for you.

If you are new to the neighbourhood, or in search of new company, societies can be a great way to make friends. Check out the local papers or library - there are usually many societies in your town or village of varying interests. Local area and history societies, language societies, community societies. All it takes is a little effort on your part to meet new people and get involved.

Then there are also the national charitable societies. They are not just after your money! Many have local branches where you can get involved in other ways, such as volunteering.

Whether you are interested in birds, railways, helping charities or just becoming part of the community there is bound to be a society that will interest you.
