The largest professional association representing practitioners of business-to-business marketing :Society and the Great ManSociology is the study of societies. More often than not, it focuses on large groups of people and attempts to divine certain patterns. But today we will discuss the individual and the role that society plays in fostering greatness. What comes to mind when we say names like Beethoven, Mozart or Michelangelo? Obviously, they were all great geniuses who had a profound effect on human history. But contrary to popular belief, genius is not produced in a vacuum. The truth is that each of these men succeeded in part because of the society in which they lived. In fact, all of the men we mentioned achieved success in societies that valued beauty, truth and goodness above all else. That is why all of these artists were supported by generous benefactors who believed that it was their social duty to support it instead of putting in new carpets. Michelangelo, for instance, was supported by one of the most powerful families in all of Italy, the Medici. He was only a child when the family recognised his incredible talents. As patrons of the arts, they took him in and saw to it that he received the best education that money could buy. This is not an isolated incident. Throughout history, societies that value truth and beauty have consistently produced the greatest painters, musicians, poets and writers. |
